They'll set their first real fruit one to two years after planting, but the smart move is pinching off that first year's flowers anyway — the plant puts everything into roots and size instead, and pays it back with more fruit the second year. The one number that decides whether they thrive or sulk forever: soil pH between 4.5 and 5.0. Most yards aren't naturally that acidic, so this is the one fruit where a soil test before planting saves years of confusion.

2Raspberry

Faster still: a full crop the summer after planting. Each cane only lives two years — it grows the first summer, fruits and dies the second — so a raspberry patch is always a mix of first-year and second-year canes, which is exactly why they keep producing instead of wearing out.

3The long game on each one

Both plants reward patience differently. A blueberry bush wants acidic, loose, well-drained soil from day one and can then keep producing for 25 years or more — the prep work is a one-time tax on a very long-lived plant. A raspberry patch never really “finishes” establishing: it's always a mix of first-year primocanes and second-year floricanes, so there's no single year it becomes fully mature and no single year it's done.
