A bat house should be mounted at least 15 feet off the ground, ideally on the side of a building, both to give bats a clear flight path and to keep ground predators out; the interior needs several feet of clear approach space and a roughened landing surface bats can grip.

Bat house interiors are stained a dark color and sealed to hold heat, because young bats need the box to reach 80 to 100°F in summer — a bat house that runs too cool in a shaded spot often goes unused no matter how well it's built otherwise.
