1The one number that matters

For non-spreader-bar hammocks, the optimal angle of the suspension lines to the anchor point is about 30 degrees. Too steep (a small angle, lines nearly vertical) and the hammock hangs tight and flat like a taut taco; too shallow and it sags into a deep U that dumps you toward the middle.

2Height and length trade off against each other

A higher attachment point and more distance between anchors both work in the hammock's favor and can be adjusted to compensate for a shortfall in the other — a lower anchor point can be offset with more distance between the two ends, and vice versa.

3Rope or webbing, either works

Hammocks can be hung with either rope or webbing straps; webbing straps are gentler on tree bark than rope, which matters if the anchor points are living trees you'd like to keep healthy.
