Hosting a party in the bedroom

About this photo

1Decide what kind of party this is

A bedroom party is small by nature. Six people for a movie night with blankets and snacks is a party. A birthday sleepover with sleeping bags on the floor is a party. A dozen people crammed in to gossip while the main event happens elsewhere is also a party, and honestly the easiest one. Pick before you plan.

2Clear the floor first

The bed becomes the couch, so the floor becomes the seating. Sweep everything off it: laundry, the chair graveyard, the shoes. A cleared floor plus every pillow and blanket you own beats fancy furniture. Day three after the party, the floor is still clean, and that is a small gift to yourself.

3Protect the bed like it owes you money

Drinks and a duvet are enemies. A folded sheet or cheap throw over the comforter catches spills and goes straight in the wash. Snacks live on a tray or the nightstand, not the pillow. One real hazard to say plainly: candles plus blankets plus elbows is how bedrooms catch fire, so skip the candles.

4Light it down, not up

Overhead lights make a bedroom feel like an exam room. Lamps only, or string lights, or the lamp plus a candle in the hallway where no blanket can reach it. People talk differently in low light. That is the whole trick and it costs nothing.

5Plan the morning after

If people are sleeping over, someone needs a spare toothbrush and the hallway bathroom to themselves by seven. If it is a movie night, everyone leaves by eleven and you get your bed back. Either way, put a trash bag by the door before the party starts. Cleanup half happens itself when the bin is in the room.
