1The actual mechanism

Fish waste (ammonia) gets converted by beneficial bacteria into nitrate — the same nitrification process any aquarium relies on, just routed through a plant bed instead of a filter cartridge. The plant roots pull that nitrate out as fertilizer and hand back cleaner water to the fish. All three — fish, plants, bacteria — have to be kept in balance for the system to actually work.

2What the build actually needs

A repurposed 275-gallon IBC tote is a common home build: half becomes the fish tank, half becomes a grow bed filled with clay pebbles or expanded shale, connected by a bell siphon that cycles water between the two on a timed ebb and flow. Deep water culture (floating rafts with roots hanging directly in the water) is the simpler alternative that skips the grow media entirely.

3The first hour

Nothing about aquaponics starts in an hour — the nitrifying bacteria colony that makes the whole system work takes weeks to establish before fish and plants can be added at full load. Plan the build first, then cycle the tank with an ammonia source before livestock go in.
