1Depth is the one number that matters

Mosquito larvae prefer water shallower than 24 inches, so a tank deeper than 2 feet is genuinely less hospitable to them from the start. Steep or vertical sides that drop quickly into deep water make it worse for mosquitoes and better for you — no shallow shelf for larvae to sit in.

2Moving water beats standing water

Adding a small fountain, waterfall or pump that keeps the water circulating breaks the stagnation mosquitoes need to breed — the egg-to-adult mosquito lifecycle takes as little as one week in favorable still water, so circulation alone removes most of the risk.

3Fish do real pest control

Fish are voracious consumers of mosquito larvae and pupae, and some local vector control programs even provide mosquito fish for free. The one rule: never release these fish into a natural waterway, since they aren't native everywhere and can disrupt local ecosystems — keep them in the contained tank they were meant for.

4The ten-minute weekly check

Clear out excess vegetation and organic debris regularly — it's what mosquito larvae eat and hide in. A simple skimmer net for a small tank keeps things in check without any chemical intervention at all.
