1The two or three ways people actually do it

Hoe and hand-pull while weeds are seedlings — the oldest method, still the standard extension offices fall back on because sprays can't touch a bed growing five different crops at once. Mulch on top of weed-free soil, 3 to 4 inches of straw or wood chips, which cools the soil and can push maturity back a few days, or plastic and cardboard, which warms the soil and can speed harvest up by a week to ten days. Or go around the problem with cardboard sheet mulching: flattened boxes laid whole (shredded or holed cardboard lets light through, which defeats it), soaked, then covered in about 3 inches of mulch.

2The habits that do the work quietly

Plant vegetables at their ideal spacing and the leaves shade the soil themselves, which slows weed germination without you doing anything. Water at the plant — drip line, soaker hose, hand-watering the base — instead of overhead, so you're not handing weed seeds the moisture they need to sprout in the empty ground between rows.

3The first hour

Pull weeds a day or two after rain, or water the bed 24 to 48 hours ahead of a weeding session — dry-soil weeding turns into a wrestling match and usually snaps the top off, leaving the root to regrow. Keep any hoeing shallow; deep cultivation cuts the shallow roots of the vegetables you're trying to protect and drags a fresh batch of buried weed seed up into the light.

4What goes wrong

Tilling feels productive and works against you twice: it brings dormant weed seed to the surface where light and warmth wake it up, and it damages the same shallow vegetable roots you're trying to protect. A perennial weed chopped up by cultivation doesn't die — pieces of root left behind can each start a new plant, so the weed population multiplies instead of shrinking.

5What it costs

Organic mulch (straw, wood chips, spoiled hay) runs cheaper than manufactured mulch (plastic, landscape fabric) and gets tilled into the soil as organic matter at season's end instead of being pulled up and thrown out — but the manufactured stuff controls weeds and grass more thoroughly. No dated 2026 price-per-bag or price-per-roll figure is sourced here; the trade-off is time and effort, not just dollars.
