Pegboard, French cleats, and tool wall basics

1Pegboard is a generic material, not a brand

Perforated hardboard is tempered hardboard pre-drilled with evenly spaced holes to accept pegs or hooks; "Peg-Board" was a trademark first used by the Masonite Corporation in 1962 that has since expired, which is why the term is now used generically for perforated boards made of hardboard, wood or metal from any manufacturer.

2Shop hazards apply to the whole space, not just the machines

General shop safety guidance treats wood, metal, automotive, glass and electrical shops as sharing the same category of hazard consideration; an organized wall where every tool has a place reduces the clutter and reaching-around-obstacles behavior that contributes to shop injuries generally.

3The outline trick makes the system police itself

Painting or tracing a tool's silhouette on the pegboard or cleat panel behind its hook means a missing tool is visible at a glance, and a wrongly-placed one stands out immediately; it's a zero-cost addition to either system that turns organization into a habit instead of a one-time project.

4The wall behind the tools matters as much as the hooks

Purdue's farm-shop planning guide puts hand tools on the wall for quick retrieval and specifies the wall itself: line it with 5/8-inch exterior plywood or 3/4-inch particle board to at least 8 feet high, so anything can be hung anywhere without hunting for a stud. That plywood liner is exactly what a French cleat wall is, in cleat form, and it's the reason a cleat wall holds heavier things than pegboard hooks screwed into drywall.

5A cleat's 45-degree slope is the whole trick

A French cleat is just a strip of molding cut at 45 degrees, screwed to the wall studs, with a matching cut on the back of whatever hangs from it; because the cleat is hidden once the board or cabinet is on the wall, it can be screwed in wherever the studs actually are, and cutting the wall cleat a little short lets the whole thing slide sideways after hanging to line up exactly where it should.
