A desk that stands up

1The sitting risk is well documented

Prolonged sitting has been linked to increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and premature death, according to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health epidemiology research on sedentary behavior. It's a genuine physiological question, not office folklore.

2Standing all day just trades one problem for another

A sit-stand workstation exists specifically to let you alternate between sitting and standing rather than commit to either one; the guidance from university environmental health and safety offices is to rotate sitting and standing roughly every two hours where possible, not to stand continuously.

3Standing has its own upkeep

To avoid standing too long, take regular sitting breaks, keep moving rather than standing still, and use a footrest or anti-fatigue mat to encourage lower-limb movement and avoid foot discomfort. Standing badly is still standing badly, even at a desk that goes up and down.

4Most of the day is already spent sitting

Federal activity guidelines cite device data showing Americans spend about 7.7 hours a day, over half their waking time, sedentary, and the 2018 advisory committee found a strong link between that time and death from any cause and from heart disease. A desk is where a lot of those hours happen.

5A three-month trial found less pain, not just less sitting

In a randomized trial of 74 desk workers, the group given sit-stand desks cut their sitting time at work and reported significantly less neck and shoulder pain after three months, along with better self-rated health and work engagement.
