A desk at your height

1The elbow angle is the anchor

Ideal typing posture is achieved when the keyboard sits below seated elbow height with the elbow angle opened to somewhere around 100 to 110 degrees; this relaxes the shoulders, neck and back and keeps blood flowing to the lower arm and hand.

2The monitor has its own two numbers

The monitor should sit 20 to 30 inches away, slightly more than an arm's length, with the top of the screen about two to three inches below eye level so you never bend your neck up or down to see it.

3A bad setup has a time limit before it hurts

Working with elbows flexed and forearms sloped upward restricts blood flow and compresses nerves at the elbow; university ergonomics guidance is direct that working this way for more than three to four hours invariably leads to muscle fatigue, not eventually, reliably.

4A laptop can't hit both numbers at once

A laptop's screen and keyboard are one fixed piece, so raising the screen to the right height lowers the keyboard out of position and vice versa; neutral posture isn't achievable on a bare laptop, which is why a separate keyboard or a laptop stand fixes what the desk height alone can't.

5The chair sets the baseline before the desk does

Feet flat on the floor, knees at or slightly below hip height, and a backrest reclined to 100 to 110 degrees is the chair setup university ergonomics programs teach before anyone touches the desk height at all; get the chair wrong and no amount of desk adjustment fixes it.
