A cardboard drawbridge opens for Dad
Published · Updated
A cardboard drawbridge rests just above the wooden floor while a daughter welcomes her father to an elaborate indoor palace. She stands beneath the arched doorway with a loose cord loop in one hand, smiling up at him. He answers with an amused expression and a hand held politely against his chest, as though waiting for permission to enter the make-believe kingdom.
Lavender towers rise almost to the ceiling around them. Their pale gold walls reveal corrugated edges, folded corners and strips of reinforcement. Paper leaves wind across the front of the structure between small warm lanterns. Thin triangular pennants connect the towers, while dark narrow windows add depth to the cardboard facades. Two ropes and broad hinge straps support the low bridge at the doorway.
The girl wears a white ruffled pinafore over a blue blouse with matching tights and flat shoes. Her father wears a navy patterned cardigan and jeans. Their everyday clothes keep the scene close to ordinary family play despite the ambitious setting. Warm floor reflections, a patterned chair and bookshelves beyond the towers show the familiar sitting room surrounding this imaginative Halloween transformation.
