A Parasol Opens Its Rainbow Underside

Published · Updated

Open parasols fill the courtyard with a field of colourful circles. Their paper canopies rest upside down on low timber racks, exposing bamboo ribs and fine threads woven around the central hubs. Red, turquoise, yellow and green lacing turns the practical structure into an intricate pattern. Near the centre, a maker lifts one pale parasol and studies its bright underside in the light.

The workshop opens through tall wooden doors onto an autumn garden. Bundles of bamboo lean against the ochre wall, closed parasols stand ready nearby, and spools of coloured thread line a long workbench. Sunlight filters through the rough slatted canopy, drawing thin shadows across the paper, stone floor and worn wooden supports.

The elevated viewpoint brings the repeated circles together while keeping the maker's quiet action easy to follow. Each canopy has small variations in its colour, lacing and paper surface. The photograph celebrates the hidden construction of an everyday object, revealing a cheerful geometry that usually faces away from view. Warm materials and garden light give the busy workshop an inviting, unhurried atmosphere.
