A Thousand Little Parasols on the Gallery Floor

Published · Updated

Thousands of tiny paper parasols form a low rectangular carpet on the gallery floor. Pink, turquoise, yellow and pale green umbrellas overlap in loose bands of colour. Near the front, their folded paper, slender wooden ribs and short stems are clearly visible. The small differences in tilt and opening angle create a lively surface, held together by a simple shallow timber frame.

The installation stretches toward tall arched windows that overlook autumn trees. Sunlight crosses the surrounding floorboards and picks out individual parasol rims, leaving small pockets of shadow between them. Exposed beams and plain cream walls keep the room quiet around the bright display. A clear strip of floor remains beside the artwork, allowing its low height and long shape to be understood. From close to the frame, the eye moves from the construction of one little umbrella to the pattern made by thousands. Familiar paper party objects become an expansive field of colour through careful repetition, with the warm gallery light revealing their delicate material.
