Basalt Columns above Black Sand
Published · Updated
Basalt columns rise above black sand along an empty coast, their uneven tops and fractured sides forming a dark vertical wall. A narrow wash of dawn light catches the nearest rock edges. White surf curves along the beach toward a distant sea stack, while the wet sand carries a faint copper reflection from the horizon.
Individual grains remain visible across the foreground, gradually softening toward the water. The cliff recedes through successive layers of gray haze, giving the shoreline a strong sense of depth. High clouds leave only a small opening for the morning sun, so much of the scene stays cool and subdued. No tracks or buildings interrupt the meeting of rock, sand and sea.
