Blind contour sketches have given two friends something to laugh about in a flower-filled garden. The younger woman keeps a pencil poised over the sketchbook on her lap. Across from her, the older woman turns a page outward to reveal a loose continuous-line face. Its wandering features belong to the drawing exercise, while the real faces above the books remain warmly engaged with one another.

A striped parasol stretches across the top of the scene, with long cotton fringe hanging from its edge. The pair sit in wicker chairs angled inward over old brick paving. A small dark table holds a floral jug and cup between them. White flowers, mauve asters and climbing greenery fill the spaces around the furniture.

Black fabric and tights create a quiet silhouette on one side. An ivory blouse and saffron pleated skirt bring light and color to the other. Crossed ankles and relaxed shoulders match the easy mood. Through the garden gate, a distant roofline gives a hint of the city beyond this sheltered afternoon.
