Costume Trunk Finds Dad a Tiny Hat
Published · Updated
A costume trunk has produced two very different choices for Dad. He holds a tiny orange cap above his hair while his older daughter offers a broad mustard hat decorated with feathers. Her delighted expression meets his amused glance. The younger girl rests her chin on his raised upper arm and reaches toward the open trunk, keeping the family gathered around the same search.
Blue and rose floral lining fills the old chest, with divided compartments holding folded brocade, velvet hats and patterned cloth. The daughters wear contrasting cotton clothes: a burgundy floral dress with a white embroidered collar and a coral blouse with blue shorts. Dad’s pale patterned shirt sits comfortably among the more theatrical garments around them.
The attic dressing room extends beneath a warm timber roof. Long rails carry coats with rich borders and elaborate cuffs, while masks hang beside the sloping wall. A dark bookcase, fringed lamps and a teal window seat make the room feel furnished and used. Autumn light enters behind strings of paper leaves, crossing the rugs and turning the costume choice into a familiar, affectionate family joke.
