A cricket bat maker follows the willow grain

Published · Updated

A cricket bat maker follows the wood's grain with a careful two-handed movement. The willow cricket bat is held horizontally in a bench vise, leaving its pale blade exposed for shaping. A metal hand plane travels along the surface, and a thin curl rises from its mouth. The close view brings the maker's focused expression and the tool's contact with the wood into the same frame.

Curled wood shavings gather across the darker bench, adding soft shapes around the straight blade. Unfinished bat blanks stand behind the work area, while brick and a bright window give the workshop an ordinary practical setting. Side light reveals fine grain, polished steel and the smooth curve of the bat's edge.
