Feather dyeing leaves a turquoise trail

Published · Updated

Feather dyeing creates a vivid transition from white to turquoise along one delicate plume. The milliner lifts it by the dry quill, allowing small drops of turquoise dye to fall back toward the glass jar. His other gloved hand steadies the container beside a metal sink. The close view reveals fine feather barbs, wet glass and the soft folds of a cream work shirt.

Rows of drying feathers cover the wall of the millinery studio in teal, magenta, amber and ivory. Wooden clips and simple cords keep each plume separate, turning an ordinary work area into a dense display of color. Neutral window light keeps the maker's focused expression clear while preserving the different textures of airy feathers, dark canvas and reflective steel.
