A garden snail race gathers a father and son around three small competitors on a damp slate tabletop. The boy leans forward with an open smile, while his father watches beside him. Their hands rest away from the snails, leaving the shells, extended feelers and faint chalk circles clearly visible between them.

An apple tree, a low fence and ochre bunting place the family garden game in an autumn setting. Blue beetle motifs brighten the boy’s rust sweatshirt, beside the fine cream pattern of his father’s navy knit. The low viewpoint gives the tiny animals prominence while keeping both expressions and the surrounding garden in the picture.
