Giant gunnera leaves shelter the garden pond
Published · Updated
Gunnera leaves form an enormous green canopy above a small garden pond. Their deeply cut edges and raised branching veins become prominent from the low viewpoint. Light passing through the wet foliage turns thin areas bright lime, while the thick prickly stalks remain dark and solid beneath them.
A small brown frog rests on a wet stone near the water, giving the giant plants an immediate sense of scale. Ferns, moss and fallen copper leaves fill the bank around it. Drops cling to the leaf teeth and reflections shift across the pond, connecting the tiny foreground animal with the broad living umbrellas that dominate the garden above.
