Great Vessels in the Pottery Hall

Published · Updated

Great rounded vessels fill a pottery hall where every surface seems to carry the marks of work. The nearest jar rises almost to the potter’s chest, with a broad shoulder, short neck and thick level rim. Fine horizontal lines circle the pale clay, catching light from the tall windows at the side of the room. Behind it, more vessels stand on low wooden platforms, their related shapes creating a calm rhythm through the space.

The building gives the craft an impressive setting. Heavy timber trusses cross the steep roof, while broad brick arches lead into deeper rooms lined with pottery. A warm glow from one alcove balances the cool autumn daylight and brings out the varied colour of the old masonry. Tools, clay buckets and smaller pots remain close to the workbench without overwhelming the composition.
