The Only Dark House on the Street
Published · Updated
One tall Victorian house stays dark while its neighbours glow with Halloween lights. Its steep roof, narrow tower and black windows rise above an open iron gate. A small trick-or-treater in a white sheet costume stands on the path with an orange pumpkin bucket held towards the silent porch. The pale cloth is the brightest shape in front of the old house, making the child's hopeful approach easy to follow.
Three friends wait together on the pavement, dressed as a witch, a scarecrow and a knight. They lean towards one another as they watch, their layered costumes catching the warm light from the neighbouring homes. Carved pumpkins crowd the steps on either side, and paper bats decorate the pale porch walls. Fallen leaves cover the path beneath orange branches and a narrow crescent moon.
The scene balances a small act of courage with the playful uncertainty of Halloween. Warm windows surround the single dark building, giving the familiar neighbourhood a striking centre of mystery without disturbing its festive atmosphere.
