Indigo Cloth Drying above a Courtyard

Published · Updated

Indigo cloth drying on a rooftop line turns a practical courtyard into a study of blue and white. Wooden pegs hold six lengths of cotton with different white resist patterns, from broad grids to narrow stripes and scattered squares. Water still drips from the hems toward wet tiles, and a wide rinsing bowl waits on a low wooden table.

A galvanized bucket and folded cream cloth complete the small working area. Weathered pale walls frame low rooftops and distant hills beneath a clear sky. Strong midday sunlight reveals the texture of the fabric and the uneven floor, while soft folds keep the hanging pieces from looking rigid. The empty space feels briefly paused between rinsing and folding.
