A lace wig takes shape one knot at a time

Published · Updated

A lace wig takes shape through a task small enough to fit between two fingertips. One hand holds a narrow group of brown strands while the other guides a ventilating needle through the fine mesh. The hooked point meets the hair at the boundary between bare lace and the already knotted section. Rows of tiny attachments show how the surface gradually becomes dense.

The cream lace is pinned over a canvas block, giving the work a firm curved support. Individual hairs catch the side light as they fall toward the dark bench. Short nails, skin creases, pinheads and the worn edge of the tabletop establish the scale. This close view makes the patient process visible without a surrounding portrait, concentrating on the join between threadlike hair, delicate mesh and a precisely held tool.
