One Leaf Down the Whole Street

Published · Updated

A single crimson maple leaf fills the upper view, its branching veins lit clearly against a patch of blue sky. Its pointed lobes and softly weathered surface make an ordinary autumn detail seem suddenly monumental. Farther down the street, a girl rides a red tricycle beneath the blazing canopy. The distance between the leaf and the child gives the scene its playful change of scale, holding a tiny falling moment above an entire neighbourhood.

Red and golden maples line both sides of the quiet road. Fallen leaves gather along the kerbs, while white fences, porch steps and pumpkins appear between the trunks. The girl’s mustard pinafore and cream jumper fit the warm colours around her, with white tights and red shoes completing the simple autumn outfit. Streamers hang from the handlebars as she pedals toward the foreground. Clear afternoon light traces the leaf edges and sends long tree shadows across the pavement. The open street and receding houses leave room for the small ride to feel unhurried and full of seasonal colour.
