A Peacock Cape at the Antique Mangle
Published · Updated
A peacock cape brings elaborate embroidered velvet to a hands-on moment at an outdoor antiques fair. A golden bird runs down one dark front panel, with pink roses and green leaves brightening the opposite hem. The woman turns a red hand mangle while watching magenta linen emerge from between the thick wooden rollers.
A large spoked wheel, curved navy upper arch, red iron frame and metal adjustment screw reveal the machine's solid structure. The short coat opens slightly above opaque tights and flat boots, allowing its red lining to catch the light. Clear sunshine brings out the contrast between plush black fabric, worn paint and polished wood. Wicker baskets and a plain brick yard keep the setting grounded.
