Popcorn hangs in the air above rows of red velvet cinema seats. Children in homemade Halloween costumes laugh and reach upward beneath the white shower, their open faces turned toward the bright screen. Near the aisle, a girl in an orange pumpkin outfit raises her hands, with her long fair hair falling over the soft fabric. Pirate, cat, dinosaur and witch costumes bring different shapes and colours to the surrounding rows.

The small auditorium is rich with carved gilt details. Curved balcony fronts repeat above the audience, red curtains frame the screen, and painted clouds and flowers fill the ceiling. Warm wall lamps catch the raised plasterwork while the screen casts a cooler light across the children.

The flying popcorn adds a loose, bright pattern above the orderly seats. Striped tubs rest in laps or on armrests, and a few kernels have fallen along the aisle. Velvet, wood, fabric and gilded plaster remain distinct beneath the busy scene. The photograph holds one joyful instant when the whole room seems to share the same burst of excitement.
