The Airship Moored to a Chair Leg

Published · Updated

A silver airship no longer than a forearm hangs just above the cottage floor. Its small gondola windows glow, and a fine thread runs from the nose to a wooden chair leg. A narrow searchlight reaches upward across the room and touches the woman’s face. Crouched behind the coal scuttle with a poker in her hand, she looks toward the little craft as if any movement might disturb it.

The coal range burns beside her, warming the grey wool dress and dark cardigan with ember light. An oil lamp stands on the table, while a carved turnip lantern glows from the dresser. Through the shuttered window, the lighthouse beam crosses the night beyond. Whitewashed walls, worn boards and a rag rug make the room ordinary enough for the miniature visitor to feel especially strange. Its ribbed skin and tiny fittings carry the same physical detail as the surrounding furniture. This Halloween photograph suits a quiet fantastical story, a portrait wallpaper or a print built around an unexpected change of scale.
