The Balcony of Patterned Ceramic Columns

Published · Updated

A row of slender ceramic columns lines a covered balcony, each shaft carrying a different pattern. The nearest is deep cobalt blue with pale climbing flowers, followed by a broad green spiral, small red motifs, chevrons and blue dots. Fine grout lines cross the curved surfaces, making the patterns read as real laid tiles. Weathered stone bases and carved leaf capitals give the colorful cylinders a common structure beneath the warm timber ceiling.

Sunlight enters from the open garden side, drawing long bands of shadow across the dark stone paving. A low balustrade connects the columns, with terracotta pots of citrus trees resting along its edge. Beyond them, pink flowers, tall cypresses and distant pale hills fill the background. The decorated beams overhead repeat a quieter geometric border that supports the richness of the columns without competing with them. The empty balcony offers a clear diagonal view through the full sequence, inviting attention to the changing colors and small material details from one column to the next.
