The Brick Oculus Star Hall
Published · Updated
Small round skylights puncture the high brick vault of this hall, surrounding a larger central oculus with scattered points of daylight. Their visible depth and bright edges reveal the thickness of the masonry, while the varied brickwork makes the curved ceiling feel solid and carefully built. Dark timber galleries line both sides of the room, with coffered undersides, slender metal rails and opal globe lights. Three tall windows at the far end bring another layer of daylight into the upper space.
On the ground floor, moss-green chairs gather around a round wooden table and a vase of flowering branches. A dark grand piano stands at the right, with a small fire glowing in a stone hearth beyond it. Wide arches connect the central hall to furnished sitting rooms, extending the view through the building. A geometric mosaic floor ties the lower room together beneath the tall brick surfaces. The photograph gives the unusual roof openings a clear architectural setting, balancing their star-like pattern with warm timber, comfortable furniture and the everyday scale of a music salon.
