The Broad Stone Stair Through the Garden

Published · Updated

A broad stone staircase climbs through a richly planted garden in a series of shallow flights. Low walls made from thin stacked stone follow the changing levels, while pale square piers mark an upper landing. The treads have rounded, irregular edges that reveal their age and use. Small daisies grow in a few joints, and white flowers spill over the wall on the left. The combination makes the stairs feel firmly built yet closely connected to the garden.

Rain has left the stone dark and glossy in places, catching patches of light filtered through the trees. Broad green leaves soften the right edge, and upright foliage adds shape behind the upper balustrade. The low viewpoint follows the steps upward, making the changing levels easy to understand. The photograph offers ideas for terraced planting, generous garden access and the use of flowers to soften masonry. Its appeal comes from the contrast between sturdy construction and the small, delicate plants growing around it.
