The Candle That Burned Green

Published · Updated

A tall green flame rises from a black candle on a worn round table. The boy beside it still holds a match, his face caught in the unusual light. Behind him, a younger girl in a lilac witch costume holds the arm of an older girl in a denim jacket. Their expressions turn the moment into a shared discovery, with the candle at the centre of everyone’s attention.

Heavy timber beams press low over the cottage room. Bundles of dried herbs hang above a broad stone hearth, and glass jars line dark shelves. A cauldron rests near the fire, while books, a brass vessel and a mortar fill the table. Cool light from the leaded window balances the warmer hearth and the green glow close to the candle.

The photograph brings a theatrical Halloween moment into a setting full of ordinary textures. Worn wood, soft fabric, rough stone and melted wax give the surprising colour something familiar to illuminate, while the children’s reactions carry the story.
