The Candles Wilting in the Chandlery

Published · Updated

The candles wilting in the chandlery bend from their shelves like pale flowers. Long threads of wax hang from their curved tips, and fresh drops gather beneath them. A candle-maker stands at the counter with a ladle held still, looking toward the window. Outside, a blazing white disc fills the night sky while the plain clock's hands meet at midnight.

The shelves hold pillar candles and carved wax pumpkins among the softened tapers. Scratched metal pots, dipping racks and a coil of cotton wick remain where the work was interrupted. Strong window light catches the translucent edges of the wax, leaving the timber grain and canvas apron warm and subdued. The repeating bowed shapes give the room an uneasy rhythm, as though every candle has reacted to the same impossible heat. This Halloween photograph offers a strange variation on a familiar craft interior, suitable for a vertical wallpaper or a seasonal print where the smallest drip helps tell the larger story.
