The Empty Square Around the Pumpkin
Published · Updated
An enormous jack-o-lantern stands at the centre of a deserted market square. Its triangular eyes and broad smiling mouth are cut deeply into a thick orange shell, whose scuffed surface catches the returning afternoon sun. Small pumpkins, straw bales and pots of chrysanthemums gather around its base, making the central decoration feel even larger. Every stall is prepared for a harvest celebration, yet the square is entirely still.
The view descends from a stone staircase past an iron railing. Below, wet cobbles spread between canvas-covered wooden stalls filled with pumpkins, flowers and dried cornstalks. Small amber lanterns hang under their awnings. Ochre and rose buildings enclose the space, and a narrow lane leads away towards the hillside town. Rainwater reflects the warm light in irregular patches between the stones.
The huge smiling pumpkin provides the playful centre of this quiet autumn scene. The empty market and clearing clouds add a sense of an event briefly suspended, with all its decorations waiting in place. Weathered plaster, damp paving and soft canvas keep the atmosphere grounded in familiar textures.
