The Forest between Limestone Blades

Published · Updated

Sharp grey limestone fins rise on either side of a deep green fissure. Their surfaces are cut into narrow vertical grooves, interrupted by horizontal breaks and fractured ledges. Some edges catch the light as thin pale lines; others disappear into shadow. Beyond the nearest rocks, a field of uneven pinnacles continues toward a low wooded horizon.

A leafy tree grows between the stone walls, spreading its branches into the available light. Ferns, vines and smaller plants fill the darker space below it. This ribbon of vegetation gives the scene its depth and a sense of scale. The tree looks sheltered by the rock, even as its bright leaves soften the severe outline of the surrounding stone.

Passing clouds leave much of the landscape in cool shade. A break in the sky lights the left ridges and the upper foliage, bringing out the varied texture of damp limestone. The rough ledge in the foreground connects that distant field of pinnacles to the viewer's position. It is a striking natural place where narrow pockets of forest occupy the spaces between stone.
