The Fountain Inside the Rust-Red Garden Crater
Published · Updated
A column of white water rises from the centre of a circular pool sunk into the garden. Tall curved walls surround the lower space, combining rust-red steel plates with grey stones held in fine metal cages. A narrow opening through the steel leads down a short flight of steps to the viewing walk beside the water. From the raised path, the complete arrangement is visible, including the basin, surrounding dry edge and changing materials around the circle. The fountain reaches just above the garden rim.
Soft grasses and small purple flowers grow around the top of the enclosure. Their fine stems contrast with the broad weathered steel, while mature trees create a green background beyond the paths. Sunlight makes the falling droplets bright and reveals orange and brown variations in the metal surface. Damp paving in the foreground carries quieter reflections. The empty garden view brings attention to a fountain that is experienced from below the lawn, with its water and retaining walls forming a distinct outdoor room.
