The Lantern Walk Through the Fog

Published · Updated

A line of glowing lanterns leads through the fog along an old brick street. The nearest belongs to a red-haired girl in a dark green cape, who turns to glance back while the others continue ahead. Its translucent paper carries the shapes of autumn leaves, and the warm light reveals the folds of her velvet costume. Beyond her, a pumpkin, a knight and a straw-trimmed scarecrow add varied shapes to the slowly receding procession.

Clapboard houses rise on either side, with carved pumpkins glowing beside their steps. Streetlamps make soft golden pools in the mist, and their reflections stretch across the damp bricks. The children’s handmade costumes stay richly textured in the foreground, while each more distant figure loses a little contrast as the fog thickens. A black cat outfit, striped bumblebee and pale ghost sheet remain recognizable farther along the line. The warm lanterns link the figures together through the cool evening air. Bare branches frame the upper street, leaving the eye to follow that gentle chain of light toward the bright haze ahead.
