The Topiary Terrace
Published · Updated
Enormous clipped yews stand above the terraces like a collection of living sculptures. Each has a tapering base and a broad rounded crown, with taller arches of greenery rising behind them. Their dark, precise silhouettes contrast with the loose planting below: pale grasses, purple flowers, silver leaves and shrubs beginning to turn bronze. The garden descends through several levels, offering a different relationship between the sculpted plants and the surrounding landscape at each step.
Wide stone stairs give the composition a clear route upward. Balustrades, low walls and rounded shrubs repeat along the terraces, creating order without making every detail identical. Rain has darkened the paving, and the low light brings out the irregular surface of the stone. A distant lake and wooded hills provide a cool backdrop to the warmer garden colors. This image works well for formal garden inspiration, autumn interiors or a richly detailed vertical background.
