The Wagon Up the Long Walk
Published · Updated
A long brick path climbs through an overgrown garden toward the dark entrance of an old house. Halfway along it, a girl pulls a small red wagon loaded with cardboard boxes. Her navy blazer and plaid skirt stand out against the dry grasses, while a ribbon gathers her long hair into a ponytail. A slim clipboard is tucked under one arm as she continues toward the steps.
The setting sun warms the left side of the garden and catches the uneven bricks. Dry hydrangea heads crowd the path, their pale petals glowing beside darker shrubs and rough stone edging. In the foreground, an old iron gate marks the beginning of the walk. Farther ahead, the open doorway remains almost black beneath the porch.
The scene creates a gentle Halloween mood through distance, light and anticipation. Nothing threatens the child, and her steady walk keeps the image grounded in an ordinary errand. The waiting house and fading daylight simply leave the next moment unresolved.
