The Turnip Oracle in the Cider Barn
Published · Updated
A carved turnip tilts above a coiled spring on a small tin box, its uneven teeth and triangular eyes turned towards the couple at the table. A blank card curls from the slot below, even though the copper coins remain stacked beside the machine. Rough violet skin, pale scraped patches and fine roots keep the vegetable visibly ordinary beneath its strange grin. Sunlight catches the folded metal edges and falls in stripes across the worn tabletop.
The couple leans close together behind the little oracle. The woman smiles in a cream cable-knit sweater with dried hydrangea at her collar, while the man watches more intently in his dark green jacket. Two pottery mugs release thin wisps of steam beside them. Barrels, apple crates and a wooden cider press fill the barn behind their shoulders, with pumpkins along the bright slatted window. Cream wool, apple red and dusty turnip violet bring warmth to the scene. The low viewpoint keeps the spring, untouched coins and emerging card central to the quiet Halloween surprise.
