Willow Tollgate Stops Dad for a Pinecone
Published · Updated
A willow tollgate turns a garden walk into a little negotiation. The youngest daughter holds a wicker basket and looks up at her father as he lowers a pinecone toward it. He crouches beside her with an amused expression, taking the pinecone payment seriously enough to keep the game going. Her older sister waits at the small twig barrier.
Woven garden arches rise around the family in overlapping layers. Thick bent stems form the main curves, while thinner branches cross between them and carry green and copper leaves. Circular openings and side chambers reveal more of the living structure. The boardwalk bends through the arches, giving the daughters’ invented checkpoint a clear place along the route.
A blue floral dress, an embroidered green pinafore and a patterned wool sweater add soft detail against the rough willow. Purple asters and golden flowers crowd the edges of the deck. Fallen leaves collect beside the posts and follow the curve deeper into the garden. The father’s low posture and the little girl’s expectant smile keep the scene warm and personal within its expansive setting.
