1When to add it

Barley straw works best applied early, before algae actually appears — fall through early spring is the recommended window. In cold water (under 50°F) it can take six to eight weeks to start producing the compounds that inhibit algae growth; in warmer water (above 70°F) it can be effective in as little as one to two weeks.

2How much to use

The standard dose is about two to three bales per surface acre of pond, or roughly 10 to 25 grams per square meter — water depth doesn't change the math, only surface area does. Ponds that run muddy or have a history of heavy algae may need two to three times that initial dose.

3One application, about six months

Barley straw stays effective for roughly six months after it's added, which for most backyard ponds means one application covers the whole growing season if timed right at the start of it.

4Why straw instead of a bottle

It's a slow-release, low-effort method that avoids introducing algaecide chemicals into water that fish, frogs and anything drinking from the pond will contact directly — the trade for going chemical-free is patience with the multi-week lag before it takes effect, not a lack of results.
