Shrub willows are specifically called out by extension programs as efficient, cost-effective plants for living barriers, because they root easily from cuttings, grow fast, and tolerate the wet, marginal ground that other shrubs sulk in.

A living willow barrier works the same way a wind fence does: it slows the wind enough that anything the wind was carrying (snow, in the extension research; leaves and dust in a backyard) drops out on the near side instead of blowing straight through.

Willow tolerates wet ground that would rot most other hedge plants, which makes a soggy corner of the yard — usually a liability — the exact spot a living willow screen wants to go.
