1The reading nook under the slope

Every attic has one corner where the ceiling dives down to about four feet, useless for standing and perfect for sitting. Shove a daybed or a wide bench under it, add a lamp on a wall arm, and you own the coziest seat in the house. Nobody visits it, which is the point.

2The bedroom nobody fights over

A small attic bedroom is the quietest room in most houses, because nobody walks past the door on the way to the kitchen. Keep the bed under the highest part of the ceiling, put drawers in the low knee walls, and let the slope do the decorating. The whole room costs less than an addition and forgives clutter.

3Knee wall storage, the honest kind

Those short walls behind the slope are usually hollow, which means free drawers. Build doors into the knee wall and you get deep storage for suitcases, holiday boxes, and the winter coats nobody needs until November. It's the rare upgrade where the awkward architecture is the whole feature.

4The craft or hobby room

People who make things end up in the attic eventually, because the mess can stay out overnight and no one judges the glitter. Long table under the window, pegboard on the tall wall, low slope for finished projects. A small space heater makes it usable from October on, which matters.

5Sorting before styling

Before any of this, there is a Saturday with the attic hatch open and a bitter reckoning with boxes labeled misc. Go through it once, honestly. Anything that hasn't been opened in three moves goes to a donation run. The attic you want starts with the attic you clear.
