1A reading nook in the low corner

The spot where the roof dips down is useless for standing and perfect for sitting. Shove a low daybed under the slope, add one lamp, and the worst real estate in the house becomes the best seat. Bring up a blanket; attics run warm in summer and honest in winter.

2Knee wall drawers that hide everything

The triangle behind a knee wall is dead space with excellent manners. Hinged doors or deep drawers turn it into the storage the bedrooms lost. One friend of mine keeps a full set of holiday dishes up there; nobody has ever guessed her attic is the china cabinet.

3The small bedroom trick

A tiny attic sleeps one person very well. Put the bed under the lowest slope so people only stand where people can stand, keep the floor open, and let the window do the decorating. A low mattress and short furniture keep the ceiling from feeling like a lid.

4A craft room with actual walls of storage

The attic forgives mess, which is why it makes a fine craft room. Long dormer counter for the machine, pegboard on the knee wall, rolling carts that slide into the low spots. The one rule I'd keep: put everything on wheels, because you will rearrange this room every season.

5Turn the slope into a headboard wall

Attics have one great gift: the ceiling comes to meet you. Lean into it with paint or shiplap from wall to roofline so the whole plane reads as one big wall. It makes a low room feel intentional instead of cramped, like the ceiling just joined the decor committee.
