1Chalkboard paint is just paint with a texture trick

Chalkboard paint is commonly a mixture of talc, acrylic, water, glycol, titanium dioxide, carbon black and silica, the same family of ingredients as ordinary paint, formulated to leave a slightly toothed surface chalk can grip. It's not a specialty material, which is why it goes on with a roller like anything else.

Federal rule also caps how much VOC an architectural coating is allowed to contain in the first place, specifically because those emissions contribute to ground-level ozone and smog.

4"Low-VOC" has real certifications behind it, not just a label claim

A genuinely low-emission interior paint is one carrying an actual third-party certification, GREENGUARD Gold, Green Seal GS-11, or a similar recognized standard, not just a can that says "low-VOC" in marketing type; building-science guidance recommends at least 90 percent of a room's painted surface use a certified product.

5Art supplies for the wall have their own federal check

Since 1988, a federal labeling law has required art materials, which covers chalk, crayons and paint alike, to carry a chronic-hazard toxicological assessment renewed at least every five years, with a conformance statement to ASTM D-4236 on the product or its packaging; paint specifically is separately capped at 90 parts per million lead. It's a real, checkable label, not just a "kid safe" claim on the box.
