Visible house numbers let emergency services find a property fast, which is exactly why both the International Fire Code and NFPA fire codes require address numbers to be legible and visible from the street, not just decorative. One county fire department is blunt about the stakes: finding a home, especially at night, can be delayed if numbers are unreadable, hidden, unlit, or missing, and that delay is measured in the response time that matters most.

2Why this works

Numbers in a color that contrasts with the house or mailbox background read from a moving vehicle; numbers that match the siding color do not, no matter how large they are. A minimum height matters more than most homeowners assume: one county's guidance sets existing house numbers at 3.5 inches tall and requires new residential construction to use numbers at least 5 inches tall. A number visible from the street but not lit is only half solved; a small light aimed at the number, or a lit house number plaque, closes the other half for the hours emergencies are most likely.

3Materials and placement

Metal, reflective vinyl or lit acrylic numbers on the house itself, a mailbox post, or a fence near the street if the house is set back or hidden; a corner lot needs the number to face the street actually named in the address, not just whichever wall faces the driveway. The U.S. Postal Service's own placement guidance for curbside mailboxes covers height and setback from the road, since the mailbox often sits right next to the number that matters most at night.
