1The short version

You can spend a Saturday with a putty knife saving what's already there, or a professional crew can spend an hour replacing it outright, and both people walk away thinking they made the smart call. A storm window, mounted outside or inside the original, closes most of the insulation gap between a single-pane window and a new double-glazed replacement, without touching the original window or its trim. A full replacement swaps the whole unit for a modern insulated-glass window, sealed as a factory unit with argon or another gas between the panes for its insulation.

2The two or three ways people actually pick

Owners of older or historic houses, especially anyone with wood windows original to the house, tend to restore and add a storm window: it keeps the wavy old glass, the narrow sightlines and the character, and storm windows were historically installed each autumn and taken down for summer before combination units made that unnecessary. Anyone prioritizing insulation over character, or with windows already too rotten to save, replaces outright. People renovating on a budget sometimes do both in stages: storms now, full replacement later.

3What it takes, and what goes wrong

Restoring a sash means reglazing loose or cracked glazing putty, freeing a painted-shut sash, and re-hanging the sash cords or chains, an afternoon per window for someone patient. Full replacement is a professional job measured in an hour or two per window, but it is also the harder one to undo: once the original frame and trim are gone, matching the house's original proportions again is difficult. The common restoration mistake is skipping a storm window afterward and expecting single-pane glass alone to perform like new construction; it will not.

Restoration starts with a putty knife and a lot of old, brittle glazing compound coming off in flakes. Replacement starts with a utility knife cutting the old caulk line and a pry bar finding out how well the original was actually installed. Neither first hour looks like progress; both usually are.
