A beagle has found the prize in the apple-bobbing tub. Water drips from its ears as it holds a red apple beside a laughing girl in a black cat costume. Her eyes are squeezed shut, and little droplets catch the warm light on her face. Across the back of the tub, five more children laugh in handmade-looking witch, pirate, scarecrow, skeleton and ladybird outfits.

The metal washtub fills the foreground, its dull zinc sides marked by pressed ribs and small irregular patches. Red apples float on the disturbed water, which carries reflections from the lamps and pumpkin decorations. Behind the children, timber panelling, paper bats and orange garlands make the basement feel like a familiar room dressed for a special evening.

The photograph captures the party through one unexpected interruption. Its cheerful expressions and tangible costume fabrics keep the scene lively, while the dog and the bobbing apples give the whole group a shared reason to laugh.
