The Giant at the End of the Parade
Published · Updated
A colossal scarecrow rises above the rooftops at the end of a Halloween parade. Its tall hat, dark coat and outstretched straw hands emerge through amber-lit mist, while a broad stitched smile looks down towards the crowd. Thick ropes descend from the figure to marchers in the avenue, making the immense construction feel part of a carefully guided procession. Confetti drifts between the old buildings and warm street lamps.
In the foreground, a girl in a rounded orange pumpkin costume watches from her father's shoulders. Her long hair falls beneath a pumpkin cap, and his camel coat catches the same golden light as the spectators around them. Costumed families line the pavements and brownstone steps, leaving the central road open for the approaching float. Small points of light continue far into the haze.
The photograph builds its sense of wonder through the difference in scale between the handmade giant and the people below. Rough straw, stitched burlap and worn cloth keep the towering figure tactile, giving the parade a warm, joyful Halloween atmosphere.
